Voice Cloning Scams

Voice cloning has been used to create company training videos, develop audiobooks, and as a support tool for those who have speech limitations. AI isn’t inherently moral; its ability to be used for good or evil is dependent on who develops it. Scammers take a short voice clip and can create a realistic representation of a person’s voice. This is used for multiple phone scams. What is the average person to do? How can we protect ourselves?

  1. Create a safe word or phrase among family members to be used to ‘prove’ the speaker’s identity. Remember to include some extended members, as voice cloning is often used in Grandparent scams.
  2. Avoid answering calls from unknown numbers.
  3. Avoid sharing your phone number online.
  4. Have someone call or text the person directly that the scammer is claiming needs help.

Remember: Hearing is NOT believing. Be cautious.
